we are live in oakland where city workers say they have a major announcement in the wake of bart workers notice of a strike. >> a major heat wave coming to the bay area. the preparations being made right now to deal with the hot weather. plus a frightening police traffic stop turns out to if a hoax. the charges one man is facing after he reportedly impersonated a police officer. it's all ahead on ktvu channel 2 morning news. good morning. thank you for joining us. it's friday. june 28th i'm pam cook. >> yes, it is pam. good morning, i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. you say steve is hot. >> no, no pam is hot. but it's going to be hot. i like the hair up by the way. it looks very nice. we do have already clear

conditions now. by the coast there is some fog. very similar to yesterday. you might have sunshine and go up to highway 1 you may hit some fog. it will start off warm and it will get warm to hot. here is sal. good morning. if you are driving on highway 4 or soon, westbound traffic is light. coming in through antioch it's getting busy. if you are driving to the golden gate bridge, the fog is not there this morning like it was in the last few days. it's clear and the traffic looks good. let's go back to the desk. we are starting with developing story that threatens to cripple the bay area commute. bart union workers are given notice they may go on strike monday morning. tara moriarty is in oakland right now where both sides in this labor dispute go back to the bargaining table later today. >> reporter: that is right. in five hours city workers say they will make a major announcement here at oakland city hall. both contracts expire sunday.

we are expecting city workers will be joining the strike as well. now all of this comes after another day of deadlock at the negotiating table. the two sides broke off at 10:40 last night. bart spokesman rick rice delivered the news saying workers will walk off the job monday if a settlement isn't reached by midnight sunday. >> we just received notice from both unions they are giving us 72 hours before a strike. although all sides remain committed to going back to the bargaining table. >> reporter: union leaders didn't elaborate on their decision saying they would provide details. many veteran bart workers still remember the last strike in 1997 that created a commuting nightmare. both sides say the strike notice doesn't necessarily guarantee that workers will strike. there have been signs of progress on the sides on the year is of salary, health care, and pensions benefits. the talks will resume at 11:00 this morning at bart headquarters and coming up we will tell you why if this strike happens, it will be very

different from the strike that happened 16 years ago. live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. more details on the threat of bart strike. other bay area agencies are expanding their services. ac transit plans to double the number of riders it takes across the bay from 14,000 child abusers to 30,000. there 30 -- from 14,000 commuters to 30,000. samtrans will run a shutting from daly city to culma. union contracts run out the the exact same time bart contracts expire sunday night. and there is a possibility workers for both transit agencies could be on strike monday morning. more than 200,000 riders take ac transit everywork day. make sure you stay right here with us for continuing coverage

of this bart strike threat. we will bring you the latest developments as they happen on air and on your mobile device. >> the city of oakland could be caught another strike. a union representing city workers plan a major announcement at 10:00 this morning. we don't know exactly what the announcement is but earlier this month voters voted to authorize a city strike. just last night the oakland city council approved a two year, $2 billion budget that provides for money. also happening today if you haven't noticed it will be hot. triple digit temperatures in some inland spots starting today. ktvu channel 2 reporter janine de la vega joins us from san jose covering the heat wave that is coming to the bay area. >> i a pretty comfortable right now. i'm wearing open toed shoes and

i'm not cold. in downtown san jose it's supposed to reach 90 degrees. one of the things though because it will heat up fire officials will be looking for is dry vegetation. you can see some of that behind me. there was a brush fire. now over the past couple of months, there has been several vegetation fires with rising temperatures and firefighters are on alert. we did not have a wet winter so brush and grasses are very dry and are good fuel for fire. now temperatures in the south bay are expected to be in the 90s. and east san jose it's supposed to reach 94 and in morgan hill and gilroy it's supposed to be in the high 90s approaching 100. and that will have many people trying to stay cool. experts say to stay out of direct sunlight, wear a hat, and drink lots of water. some places are bound to fill up this weekend like the movie theaters or the mall because of the air conditioning. those who work in the cooling

system business expect to be vamped this weekend for calls for service. one tip is to change your air filter, that will save you money. if you do leave your house if you want to save money, don't turn your air conditioner off. leave it at least 82. it takes a lot longer to cool your house down if you turn off the air conditioner. overall it's a good weekend to head to the beach. it will be cooler there in santa cruz. it will be in the 80s rather than the 90s. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 news. time is 5:06. new this morning in vallejo a man arrested last night could face charges on suspicion of impersonating a police officer. ktvu cap pro followed a car with five people inside to their apartment complex and blocked that car, pulled out a fake gun, and ordered them to throw out their keys. the real police arrived shortly

after and arrested capo. he was wearing a black t-shirt with the words police department on it and had a replica gun. new details about the jumbo jet that took off from sfo last night heading to germany but was diverted to seattle. around 11:30 last night they landed safely at the tacoma airport with 323 passengers and 16 crew members and an electrical smell filtered into the cabin of the plane. three people two crew members and a passenger had to be treated for minor irritation. there was no fire but the pilots decided to land that plane as a precaution. >> very cool. no complaints. everybody is happy to land. >> pretty calm. it was very relaxed even though we had to wait here for quite a bit. >> passengers stayed here in hotels overnight. wartime relics are rattling

nerves at a construction site. last night bomb experts blew up a mortar that was found buried. a section of the parkway was closed. the three foot mortar may have date the back to world war i or ii. and this was the third explosive found at that construction site and the second one in consecutive days. if you have a flight scheduled out of sfo, be prepared for possible delays. one of the main runways is closed for continuing improvement work. it will remain shut down until 8:00 tomorrow morning which is expected to slow arrivals and departures. there could be delays of up to one hour. time now 5:08. hey, sal, i know you are watching everything else in the east shore. are you thinking friday light? >> we hope so. we haven't had friday light in awhile. >> no, we haven't. >> we'll see what happens. i'm remaining optimistic. let's go out and take look at the commute now. traffic on 80 westbound it looks pretty good as you head out to the mccarthur maze.

no major problems at the bay bridge toll plaza. this is a live look at 280 and downtown san jose. if you drive to your job in the valley, pretty soon you could jump ahead of the crowd. or actually next hour or so in the south bay. 508 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. very good morning. very, very shallow fog near the coast. inland it's very mild top warm. it will be for about four or five days. then it will break down and cooler weather will be here by this time next week i will be talking about a big cool down. nice by the coast to mild to warm depending on where you are. hot inland. no doubt about it that blanket will cover everyone. in the valley and inland temps just don't get much of a sea breeze it will be warm to hot. heat advisory starts this

weekend. 90s to 100s. don't forget the pets as well. remember drinks lots of water sunscreen, stay out of that heat. by the coast it will be all right. this upper trough it won't be a quiz. i think that inches toward us by early next week. 60s on the temps very mild. only a couple upper 50s. half-moon bay is in there and san francisco. there are a couple readings there. but there are a lot in the 60s. 60s ukiah and sacramento. 70 and 80s. it will be blazing hot. it will be on broil down there in las vegas. some of this monsoon tropical moisture comes sneaking up toward the sierra. fog near the coast sunny and warmer though. hot inland. temperatures now 80s for some. 90s for others. near 100. to 100. the tough call is always from pacifica to half-moon bay. you could have a huge difference there. gilroy will go 99. tomorrow you will be in the 1-

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. it's 5:13. is a former military leader is being investigated into an intelligence leak. there are reports that retired marine general james cartwright is under investigation accused of leaking classified information about a cyber attack on iran. the 2010 attack used a virus to disable you are rain january enrichment. the company usis performed a background check on snowden in 2011 clearing him for his job as a contractor with the national security agency. investigators say from 2008 to 2011usis failed to perform a second review of the background check it conducted 50% of the

time. that second review is a requirement in the contract with usis that it has with the government. time now 5:14. a new development on the search in new zealand for a missing sailboat with americans on board. rescuers think that boat sank between new zealand and australia. they were last heard from june 4th. officials say they haven't given up hope that someone may be still alive. immigration reform passed the u.s. senate but it's not expected to move quickly in the house. kyla campbell is live in our washington, d.c. newsroom with details on last night's vote and what is next for immigration reform. >> reporter: the senate voted 68-32 to pass an amended immigration reform bill. it's the first move since 1986.

california senators barbara boxer and dianne feinstein showing their support for the plan and the 13 year path to citizenship. this week the senate added border security requirements including doubling the number of border patrol agents. and finishing 700 miles of fencing along the mexican border. the gang of eight members gave emotional speeches last night. >> to to our factories and our fields. go to the kitchens and construction sites. go to the cafeterias in this very capitol and there you will find the miracle of america is still alive. >> reporter: but the senate bill could die in the house. republicans led by house speaker john boehner will create their own bill and boehner is in no rush. he hopes to vote on a plan by the end of the year. but there is some pressure. just how soon house republicans plan on meeting to discuss immigration when i see you next. live in washington kyla campbell ktvu channel 2 news. time is 5:16. berkeley police want your help

in the search for a man suspected of a sexual assault on cal fraternity and sorority row. john anthony martin described as 6'6", 280 pounds ask accuse -- is is accused of going into a woman's bedroom and sexually assaulting her while she was asleep. the woman says he ran away when she woke up and screamed. squatters may be to blame for a house fire in oakland. this one started last night at an abandoned house. witness told firefighters they saw squatters leaving the building at the time of the fire. firefighters put out the flames quickly. no one was hurt but the investigation goes on. once again a federal judge is issuing an important warning to oakland city hall. the judge is accusing city leaders of not cooperating with the man he hired to clean up oakland's troubled police department. this is the second time the judge has complained about

thomas frazier. time now 5:17. the golden gate district will spend $20 million to improve one of its ferry boats. the district operates seven boats and the mb san francisco is one of the oldest. it will be stripped down to the basic haul. it will be like a new boat once that work is finished in the fall of next year. two other boats will take over its usual workload while it's being worked on. taking the ferry might be something more people try out next week, sal, if we have a bart strike. >> you know what, i think what is going to eventually happen if there is a prolonged bart strike is that people will figure it out. when the earthquake happened in '89 and the bridge was loaded, you thought there was going to be -- and the bridge was closed you thought there was going to be a huge traffic jam.

coast. heat advisory starts for the weekend. again don't forget the pets. we have a system up in the pacific northwest. i think next week it will inch toward us. that is a big area of dome of high pressure. it will not budge too fast here. 60s for some. 50s for others. 50s up in the mountains. some pop up thunderstorms some tropical moisture working its way around the high. so if in the sierra and mammoth some of it might work right there. pretty strong low for this time of year. sunshine and warmer temps. fog near the coast. it's really down there. i mean really down there. 60s and 70s and 80s and 90s to near 100s. huge difference in these temperatures. 100s through the interior. 80s around the bay to near 90. 60s and 70s on the coast. most european markets are down this morning despite good

economic reports from the united kingdom and germany today. a very different story across asia. strong gains there. japan finished up 3.5%. taiwan, hong kong, and south korea also posted gains of more than 1% each. let's take a look at the futures for our markets. latest read indicates a decent opening. slightly higher opening across the board for the dow, nasdaq, and s & p. they all posted pretty good gains yesterday. time is 5:21. celebrity cook paula deen her fall from grace continues. the newest company to drop her program. plus the deen products that are still selling. and setting the record straight. ♪

fine because he didn't have the proper permit. time is 5:24. now we are hairing from the san jose parent accused of stealing money from the pta fund at this children's school. ktvu news spoke exclusively with keith michael dennis. he's accused of stealing more than $25,000 from the pta over a two-year period ending in october. ktvu patty lee talked to him. >> yes, i'm embarrassed to be in this situation. as i'm sure most people would be. i just hope it's a good remedy for everybody. >> now dennis turned himself in on wednesday. he's expected to make his first court appearance next month. he's been charged with four felonies including grand theft, embezzlement and two counts of forgery. paula deen's cooking empire continues to crumble.
